Founded in 2001, AC Oxgangs FC field fifteen teams selected from a total player pool of almost 180 youngsters ranging in age from 8 to 17 years old.
The Club Committee and our 35 strong team of Coaches are dedicated to providing a positive, friendly and safe environment in which our players can develop their footballing skills.
The Club runs a soccer 7’s school which sees youngsters from ages 8 – 12 years old learn the basics of the game with a focus on soccer development and, as importantly, enjoyment. Home matches are played at either Meggatland or St Marks Primary on Sunday mornings with normally one weekly training session split by age group. The Sevens School is affiliated to the Edinburgh South Soccer Development Association (ESSDA) which also promotes football for boys and girls through the playing of non- competitive small sided games.
Supporting the committee are the parent-coaches, who have undergone SFA-accredited coach training, First Aid training as well as meeting the criteria of Child Disclosures Scotland. Peter Philp from the Under 11’s (Born 1997) advised “The Club has been set up in response to a huge demand for kids to play football in and around the Oxgangs area. We are a structured and very well run football club where the focus is developing the childrens’ footballing skills regardless of ability. Quite simply there is an infrastructure in place that supports children playing football from Soccer 7’s through to Soccer 11’s”.
At Soccer 11’s – age 12 years old and above – the emphasis shifts to more competitive matches under the stewardship of the Scottish Youth Football Associaton (SYFA), where a number of our age groups are doing very well and regularly reaching cup finals and pushing for league honours. Due to the demand for 11 aside pitches in the Edinburgh area, ‘home’ matches are played across a number of locations such as Patties Road, Roseburn and Meggetland.
However, the club are really looking forward to returning to their ‘native’ home – Colinton Mains Park for the start of the 2008/09 League Campaign. This will see all age groups Soccer 7’s and Soccer 11’s playing all their home matches at the one location. Doug Reilly, Club Chairman commented, “This has been a long time coming. However, working closely with the Council, we are looking forward to our anticipated return to Colinton Mains. This will give the club a real sense of belonging which will only enhance further the great progress AC Oxgangs have made over recent years.”
