Since 2006, the public have been invited to explore the enclosed world of Midmar allotments on just one day in August. For about 170 plotholders, this secret garden offers a source of fresh vegetables and fruit, mental and physical exercise, good company and almost spiritual sustenance through the year.
The annual Open Day is a way for the plotholders to share their appreciation and pleasure with a wider audience. In 2009, the Open Day will be held on Saturday 22 August. The gates open at 1.00 pm and close at 4.00 pm. The allotments are entered via the two gates off Midmar Drive where there will be stalls displaying a wide range of produce.
In 2008, a communal cabin was built and here visitors will be able to shelter from the weather of the day (hot or wet) and enjoy a cup of tea and home baking.
Visitors are encouraged to explore the plots for themselves and questions are always welcome.
