Morningside Community Council 2008 round-up.
August was a particularly sad month, when our hard working Chair of eight years, Susan Wong, sadly lost her battle with cancer. Susan, despite severe sight difficulties and with a heart condition had given much of her working life to both Morningside and the wider community. Apart from The Community Council, she belonged to The Friends of Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill and Parents of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Adults, and she helped to run the Simulated Patient Programme. She will be sorely missed. The August meeting was held in memory of Susan and many members of the community paid their own tribute.
During the year, Richard Ellis took over as Secretary and at the Annual General Meeting in October, Jean Thompson (our Vice-Chair for several years) was elected Chair, Arne Strid was elected Vice Chair, Goff Cantley was elected Planning Officer and Lindsay Walls continued as Treasurer.
The Community Council continues to meet7.10 for tea and coffee and 7.30 start at The Open Door, 420 Morningside Road on the third Wednesday of the month, to which all members of the public are invited.
In October, we had a presentation from Inspector Horan of St. Leonard’s Police Station accompanied by P.C. McGee on Community Safety. The Novmeber speaker will be Sandra Dixon, Manager of The Open Door.
On 8th December, we again facilitated the switch on of the Christmas Lights. As in previous years, activitied started at 6.30 pm with music from the Salvation Army Band accompanied from 6.45 by a choir from St. Peter’s Primary and South Morningside Primary.
At 7 o’clock, Aileen Paterson, author of the” Maisie in Morningside” books switched on the lights. It was a lovely evening everyone joining in the singing of traditional carols and consumption of mulled wine and mince pies supplied by local traders.
