The Open Door is a small community centre/cafe on Morningside Road that has been supporting the local community of South Edinburgh for over 27years. We, in turn have been supported by the community in many ways, such as volunteering to work in our Coffee Shop, supporting our Lunch / Activity Groups for the frail and elderly, fund raising and by the giving of many generous denotations; so you could say we support each other, the true spirit of community.
We provide over 80 volunteer places with ages ranging from 14 – 93! People who volunteer come from all walks of life and enjoy giving their time and experience.
We also provide volunteer places for people with support need either through mental health concerns or learning diffi culties.
Our policy is and always will be- ‘everyone is welcome.’
Our groups for the elderly are fun, a real social event with lunch provided; these run every Tuesday 10.30 – 3pm and 10.30 – 2.30pm Thursday.
We offer a respite service for carers on Saturdays who are then able to enjoy some free time knowing their charges are also having fun, enjoying activities and lunch with friends in a warm, supported and friendly environment.
The Open Door is also a meeting place for many local groups, charities and faiths so we feel that we are at the heart of the community and being on a busy and frequent bus route we are easy to access.
We also run three social clubs open to all, the Art Group, Fridays 10 -12.30pm, the Stitching Group, Wednesdays 1.30 – 3.30pm and the Poetry Society 6 -8pm on the
first Friday of every month so why not come along and join in?
Like everyone else we are experiencing some difficulties at this time and are asking once again for community support. You can do this in many ways by volunteering with any of our activities, by becoming a member of the Open Door, by joining our
200 club, (you buy a number and then are entered into a monthly draw so you can win too).
Donations are always welcome and if we are able to gift aid it then the Tax Man also makes a donation. We have a Legacy information leaflet as many people like to support their favourite charities after their death. As you can see there are lots of things you could do but the easiest by far (and the most pleasant) is to come along,
bring a friend and buy a coffee and a slice of cake, yum! If only all charitable works were so easy.
Support your local community centre and help us to keep the door open.
